Bulgarian Wine Regions

The South Western region covers what is popularly known as Pirin Macedonia. The Struma Valley runs along it and brings strong Mediterranean influence in terms of climate. The grape varieties that are grown in this region include  Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and the local Broad Vine of Melnik. The resulting wines are characterized by warm southern tones in the aroma, with a full-bodied taste. Of a particular interest are the Broad Vine of Melnik wines,  that are aromatic and hefty, and also age very well.  Here is a list of the cities/towns that are producing wine/spirits in the South-western Region: Blagoevgrad, Damjanitsa, Melnik, Petrich, and Sandanski.
